Best 1990s Records Every Collection Needs
As the decade that prepared us for the millennium, it is only natural to expect much from the ’90s. Most notably in music at this time was the rise of some excellent artists that shook the world in the early 2000s. Here is the list of the best 1990s records that you should have in your collection.
Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister (1996)
We like some bands solely for the personality of their members, others for the genius in their music. So it was a beautiful thing to know that this group combined a pleasing personality with one of the most exquisite voices we heard among the best 1990s records. “If You’re Feeling Sinister” is an epic album, yet came with a level of gentility that the decade was not known for.
The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995)
Back in the mid-90s, this album had the power to make a bad day turn good, and it was not just hype. No! It was pure love. Hardly can words define the color and imagery that each track in this album brings. It is one that’s worth gracing any current collection.
Pavement - Crooked Rain (1994)
After a while of showing the world what they could be individually, the band decided to pull their efforts together again, and the result was one of the most solid, fresh album of the decade. Track for track,
crooked Rain had the right spice to keep anybody glued to their stereo. This is one album that we will keep jamming to for the next few decades.
The Flaming Lips - Transmissions From the Satellite Heart (1993)
Most reviews of best 90s jams have this one and its no surprise why. Each track here has something to keep you spellbound, from the fantastic vocals to the quality of the production.
Pavement - Wowee Zowee (1995)
If we are ever going to have a course on how fucking an album up can make it better, then there would be no better teacher than Stephen Malkmus. Just as it was with the debut album if this act, the fuck-ups that we saw in this one contributed to the charm that stands it out. It’s something worth listening to for its true worth.
Green Day - Dookie (1994)
Perhaps it’s how they helped to redefine music in the 90s from what we used to know that endeared Dookie to our hearts, but we still live craving the beautiful melody from this astounding album.
Morrissey - Vauxhall and I (1994)
Morrissey’s career became a hit that we didn’t expect after the fuck up we saw in Smiths. Personally, it’s hard for me to pick a favorite track from this album considering the beauty in all the tracks. There is just something to suit everybody irrespective of taste.
Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt (BEST 1990S RECORDS)
There’s something in this album that we’ve never seen again in any album. We can’t exactly place whether it is the laid back vibe or the smooth lyrical flow Jay-Z brought or even the diversity in the album, but it keeps even the least music enthusiasts entertained from track to track.
DJ Shadow - Entroducing (BEST 1990S RECORDS)
There’s probably not going to be a music album as hyped as Endtroducing from DJ Shadow and sincerely, we can see why. It is one album that contributed to changing the face of hip-hop as we knew it before 1996. There’s just a special beauty in this album that keeps it ever new several years after.
Pinback - Pinback (BEST 1990S RECORDS)
There would have been no better way to close the decade than with the debut album of one of our favorite band of the 2000s. We don’t even know why we need to explain why this album is on this list – because it just makes sense. It’s a purely spiritual experience anybody would love to have any day and any time.
If you’ve read to this point, then congratulations. You are ready to update your music collection with some of the most exceptional vinyl of that decade.
